Hello! The past few months have been very busy, in February we attended the Training Institute for Mobilizing Men in Atlanta. The event was developed by Men Stopping Violence and a Call to Men.
MAV will continue to hold meetings through April and in the coming weeks, we will present at Texas Women's University and the University of North Texas. As always, you can find more info on the Calendar.
The first MAV meeting of the semester is scheduled for Monday, Jan 28, 2008 in Wooten Hall 115. More info on the Calendar. See you there!

The White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) is the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women (VAW). In over fifty-five countries, campaigns are led by both men and women, even though the focus is on educating men and boys.

MAV has a few events planned this week.. Wednesday and Thursday, MAV will be Tabling in UNT free speech area "B" from 9:30am-1:30pm. Also, this Saturday, October 6th, MAV will take a trip to the Nelson Center along with NAEA and SWSA. We hope that you can make it out to one of these events! Check our calendar for more info.
In the wake of NT student Lorena Sandoval's slaying, in which her boyfriend was charged with murder, campus groups such as Men Against Violence urge male students to join their campaign to end men's violence toward women.

This month in the media section, we feature 2 interviews with Byron Hurt. 1 video interview from AOL Black Voices, 1 audio interview from NPR: Here & Now. Byron discusses his film Beyond Beats and Rhymes and talks about larger cultural issues surrounding masculinity.
Men Against Violence has received a micro-grant from the Texas Council on Family Violence to work with communities of faith in connecting their faith with non-violence. Today, Men Against Violence attended a meeting hosted by TCFV in South Austin to help develop our plan and to connect with other grantees. We will have pictures, a full report about the trip and more about the micro-grant project up very soon.

We started with a preview of Beyond Beats and Rhymes by Byron Hurt. We will be posting more media clips in the coming months. The newest addition to our media section is a preview of Tough Guise by Jackson Katz. All of these films are available at the UNT Media Library and are easy to locate for purchase.
Beyond beats and rhymes start time has been moved up, it will now start at 7pm.
MAV is hosting a screening of Beyond Beats and Ryhmes by: Byron Hurt in the Lycieum (in the UNT Student Union) on March 28, 2007 at 7pm. After the film, there will be discussion group where everyone will be able to voice their comments and reactions.
Conceived as a "loving critique" from a self-proclaimed "hip-hop head," Hurt examines issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today's hip-hop culture.
"Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" is a riveting documentary that examines representations of gender roles in hip-hop and rap music.

The "Silent Witness Project" is a massive public display memoralizing female victims of mens violence in Texas.
Last year we made over 700 signs representing women who were murdered by their male partners. This year we have displayed the silent witness project at the Vagina Monolagues at UNT and UTD.
We could have done anything with our time that evening. So why did we protest? The answer is simple: "Girls Gone Wild," Mantra Films and founder Joe Francis promote the exploitation and objectification of young women. more
